Paper-Saving Organization Ideas |
We’re about halfway through April and spring is well underway, which means it’s the perfect time for spring cleaning and organization projects. Not only that, but April is also the month when we honor the earth through Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations. It’s a happy coincidence that becoming a more efficient, organized researcher means you will use fewer resources, which in turn makes you a greener researcher! Here are a few Earth-friendly organization ideas to get you started: Digitize Your Notes and Lists I am a chronic maker of to-do lists, which unfortunately results in a lot of wasted paper. There are a great many apps that make to-do listing and note-taking a breeze (and much greener). Here at Family Tree we’re fans of Trello, as well as the note-taking software Notion. Adopt a New “Scratch Paper” System I do my best thinking when I can draw or scribble on a piece of “scratch paper.” If you’re the same way, consider investing in a white board or something similar. I scribble away on mine, and if I really want to save my scribbles, I can take a photo or scan it for later reference. With an appropriate file name, of course. Diversify Your Bins and Trays Many of us have a bin for trash in or near our workspace. Consider adding a small recycle bin next to the trash if recycling is available in your area. I’d also suggest adding a few different trays in your workspace to improve organization and cut down on printed materials in the future. If you don’t have the space for full trays, a simple standing file system would work as well. Designate the following categories: To File – materials to file away at a later date To Scan – materials to scan and then discard To Cancel – printed materials that can be d from, or that offer a digital option (promotions, newsletters, etc.) Finally, if you have a place in your workspace where you can keep some fresh flowers, we’d recommend it. Even if it’s just the kitchen counter. It is a great way to reward yourself after a cleaning spree and it can help motivate you keep things tidy, at least for little while! |
