Gifts for the Genealogist Who Already Has Everything |
Does this describe you or somebody you know? You’ve already had your DNA tested. You also already have a printed family tree displayed in your home and your car is already sporting that “I Seek Dead People” bumper sticker. You are the Genealogist Who Already Has Everything. If you're not sure what to put on your wish list this year, or if you're the poor soul trying to think of what to get for the Genealogist Who Already Has Everything, we're here to help! Here are some new genealogy gift ideas that have either recently become available or old standbys that may get overlooked. (We consulted our Facebook and Threads followers, and they had some great gift ideas as well.) New and Classic Genealogy Books You can’t go wrong with a classic genealogy book like Elizabeth Shown Mills’ Evidence Explained or The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy. However, there are some new, fun titles that you might also consider. How about a genealogical case study? Try Buried Secrets: Looking for Frank and Ida by Anne Hanson or Delving into My Bitterroots: How I Resurrected My Enslaved Ancestor, Granvill, and So Can You by Donise Smith Lei. Both these books walk you through the author’s process of discovering difficult-to-research ancestors, and explains how you can as well. Want something a little more fun? Nathan Dylan Goodwin has a new genealogy mystery out this year: The Sawtooth Slayer, the latest in his Venator Cold Case series. |
Know Your Pet DNA by Ancestry As many of our regular readers know, this year Ancestry released its first-ever DNA test just for dogs. The test results not only include a breed breakdown, but also Traits and Matches. Whether it's silly or exciting, this unique gift won't be forgotten for many holidays to come! Subscriptions Speaking of Ancestry, this year the company announced a new membership called AncestryDNA Plus. Several important features including Traits are now part of this paid plan. At $29.99 for 6 months, this could be a good gift option for those who have taken an AncestryDNA test but don't yet have a membership. Other ideas to consider are a Newspapers.com subscription, a one-year membership to a local historical or genealogical society, or perhaps a subscription to an excellent genealogy magazine (wink, wink). Practical Stuff Several of our Facebook followers sang the praises of practical items such as external hard drives, portable scanners, archival supplies and even printer ink cartridges. Sure, these items aren’t “cool” but they are worth considering as stocking stuffers! |
