5 Fish Review Bandit Walleye Deep Diver
Lake Erie’s #1 Walleye Lure - The Bandit Walleye Deep Diver Bandit lures have been around for decades and catch fish nationwide but on Lake Erie, the Bandit Walleye Deep Diver is the top choice for walleye trollers. These baits were around for several years before they gained strong popularity in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. For decades, trolling in the Western Basin was frowned upon by the jig fishermen. Today, most boats have several boxes of Bandits in both stock and custom colors. What makes the Bandit such a dominant lure on Lake Erie? Well, my opinion is that the #1 reason they outfish other baits running at the same depth and at the same speed is that they make a different sound. Bandits have a hard “knock” sound when swimming through the water. For some reason it seems that walleyes really like a hard “knock” and they can’t resist taking a swing at these baits. When trolled, these baits max out at about 27ft with 200ft of 10lb monofilament. The only negative comment you’ll read about these lures is that the hooks could be better. While I agree the hooks are not the best , they aren’t terrible either. It does not hurt to upgrade these hooks. I’d recommend a size 4 or 2 Owner ST-36 Treble Hooks. You can also change the action of the baits by playing with the hook size on the back hook. If you want a slower wobble, use a larger treble as your back hook. What about colors? Colors do matter under certain circumstances. Daylight, weather conditions and water clarity all play an important role when selecting colors. During lowlight or dirty water conditions I like bright colors or Bandits that have a lot of white in them, like the JT Custom Color - Beetlejuice. On sunny days, it’s hard to beat good ole’ Chrome Black Back or Chrome Blue Back. If you’re a tournament fisherman or a recreational angler that wants to put meat in the freezer, the Bandit Walleye Deep Diver should be part of your arsenal if you’re trolling for Walleye on Lake Erie. Before you know it, you’ll have a Trinity Special Mate Tackle Box or two…..or three full of them. Tight Lines,
