Well-designed foundation plantings enhance the appearance ("curb appeal") and value of your home. Careful planning can ensure a design that pleases the eye and minimizes maintenance.

Do Coordinate with your house style. Formal architecture can be enhanced by formal plantings, such as clipped shrubs and symmetrical design. Cottage-style homes may call for more casual mixed plantings. Pay attention to scale. Small homes can be overpowered by large plants. Keep things in scale with dwarf shrubs and small-scale perennials. Plan ahead. Research the mature sizes of plants to ensure they won't block windows, overwhelm the path, or crowd the entryway in a few years. Go for year-round interest. Trellises, arches, stonework, and other permanent installations captivate the eye in all seasons. Choose plants that bloom at different times and include some evergreen shrubs. Install irrigation. Avoid planting trees and large shrubs under telephone, electricity, and cable wires. Obstruct air conditioner vents. However, a tree or trellis that shades your AC from a distance will increase its efficiency.
