Summer can bring a host of funky fungi and bad bacterial diseases to your garden bed. If you notice fuzzy white patches, black spots on leaves, or drooping brown stems, your garden may be the unfortunate host of one of the many common garden fungi, molds, or bacteria. Learn how to prevent and treat garden diseases: 

• Keep foliage dry and get water directly to the roots by using drip irrigation or soaker hoses, rather than overhead watering. 

• Space individual plants widely to promote good air circulation between leaves and stems. 

• Apply neem oil to infected leaves. Derived from the neem tree, this oil is safe for people, pets, and produce.

• If the disease spreads, uproot and destroy the entire infected plant. Some bacteria and molds can overwinter on seeds and stems, so removing the whole plant now will avoid impacting next year’s success.
