American Grit: I Was There

It's been a year.

 

And all of us who can say, "I was there," can say without too much trouble that we knew Afghanistan was a lost cause.

 

It had to end. Yes. But ending it like it did felt worse than ever having fought the war at all. It was an insult from the top down. Thousands of lives and tens of thousands of limbs later, our leaders managed to lose what our brothers and sisters suffered in misery to gain over the space of a weekend. Twenty years lost in days – how’s that aftertaste, America?

 

I was there. You were there. Don’t drown those memories in alcohol, numb them with pills or blow them clean out of your brain with a bullet.

 

You are a witness. And we need to remember, because no one else will.
