That’s especially true for winter sports athletes, who often face criticism for advocating for reduced emissions while jet-setting around the world to ride gas-guzzling snowmobiles and helicopters.

Through skier Amie Engerbretson’s introspective journey, the documentary navigates the tension between environmental advocacy and carbon-intensive sports.

Women Don’t Feel Safe Outdoors

In a report on global trends for athletes in 2023, Strava found that globally, women “were 9% more likely than men to cite a lack of safe places to exercise.”

But in the U.S.? That statistic jumps up to 70% — 70% of women surveyed in the report don’t feel like they have a safe space outside.

You already know the outdoors is full of icky stuff like dirt, sweat, and sometimes blood, and now it is time to look at the icky stuff in our communities. Danger, threats, concerns — what makes an outdoor (or any space) safe?

What’s Next

Hopefully, in doing so, we can decrease or remove that barrier that so many women encounter. Because at the end of the day, we all deserve to be outside.

CA Introduces Commercial Fishing Bill

In a move officials say will safeguard its marine ecosystems, California lawmakers introduced a bill on February 8, 2024, aimed at tightening regulations on commercial fishing along the West Coast.

The bill would:

• Completely ban gill and trammel nets by 2025

• Further impose bans on the take of any giant sea bass or great white sharks

• Require a neutral, third-party observer on board for all commercial fishing trips

The biggest issue with many of these conservation bills comes down to cost, and this one certainly isn’t immune to that. Overall, the introduction of AB 2220 represents what could be a milestone in California’s ongoing efforts to protect its coastal waters and marine biodiversity.
