Plus, the secret to pulling off black nail polish. | | What a week! The first blush of award season arrived with the Golden Globes, which supplied an array of beauty inspiration from Amanda Seyfried’s plum eyeshadow to Selena Gomez’s jet-black manicure (more on each, below). It was also a special week for InStyle, as we had the honor of joining Lancôme for a party to celebrate their new global ambassador, Joy Sunday. Between our shared obsession with Juicy Tubes and her supercharged getting-ready playlist, chatting with her for our Night Moves column was—you guessed it—pure joy. Per her guidance, throw on “Dance For You” by Empress Of while getting ready for your next night out. You won’t regret it. | — Lauren Valenti, InStyle Beauty Director | | | | | BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK | | “For a makeup palette that's ‘70s-inspired, choose warm browns, beiges, and champagne highlights, with occasional pops of shimmery pastel brights.” | — Benjamin Puckey, makeup artist and global color director for Clé de Peau | | | | | PHOTO: Getty Images | TREND TEST | Inspired by Amanda Seyfried at the Golden Globes (and color theory!), I knew I had to test-drive a purple smoky eye with Lancôme’s Hypnôse eyeshadow palette in 06 Reflet D’Amethyste. Makeup artist Karina Morey used the deepest plum shade to give me a wash of hazel-eye-enhancing color for the InStyle x Lancôme party. And I must say, it was a hit, reinforcing my longstanding belief that jewel tones are always a good idea. | | | | EMPTY OF THE WEEK | JUARA Candlenut Glow Body Oil | A year ago this month, I went on a life-affirming trip to Bali. I can’t wait to return, but until then, I'll continue looking to Indonesian skin-care brand Juara and, in particular, its Candlenut Glow body oil, to transport me back. Especially when it’s cold outside, enveloping my limbs in this warming, sense-awakening elixir leaves my mind and body at ease—with softer, more supple skin all over, to boot! | | | | | | PHOTO: Courtesy of Essie | Q+A with Lauren | Q: I want to start wearing black nail polish, but how do you make it chic and wearable for every day? | A: I don’t know about you, but for me, black nail polish and the noughties are inextricably linked—in the most ideal, nostalgia-stoking way. This is thanks to Chanel’s cult-classic Black Satin, the polish that launched a million inky manicures in the 2000s. So let’s remember: Black nail polish has the endorsement of the legendary French fashion house (though, now it's 161 Le Diable carrying the torch). But the shade is the easy part; what really sets the tone is length and shape. Take for example Selena Gomez's onyx manicure at last Sunday’s Golden Globes: Nail artist Tom Bachik painted Essie's Licorice on a “shorter nail in natural shape [to keep the] look strong and chic.” Whether paired with a dramatic gown or a blazer-and-jeans look, you can’t go wrong.
