As a product designer, he was often inspired by materials that others considered mundane, and he used these materials to create innovative designs with unique functionality. The Castiglioni design team of Achille and his brothers, Livio and Pier Giacomo, worked from the viewpoint that design must restructure an object's function, form and production process—and this philosophy guided each and every one of their creations. | | Born in northern Spain, Patricia Urquiola initially trained in architecture in Madrid, but has spent the majority of her educational and professional career as a product designer in Italy, training under and working with such renowned Italian designers as Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti. In the early 1990s, while designing furniture with Urquiola at the De Padova furniture company, Magistretti encouraged her to always aspire to the highest professional standards at a worldwide level. Taking such advice to heart, it is to this level that Urquiola continually aims. | | Michele De Lucchi is something of a design rebel. A prominent figure in radical/anti-design movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis in the 1970s and 1980s, De Lucchi worked alongside another rebel, Ettore Sottsass. Sottsass became a kind of mentor, encouraging De Lucchi to experiment with color, materials and unexplored themes. During this period, De Lucchi created his most popular product to date, the Tolomeo Task Lamp for Artemide. | | Verner Panton had a strong desire to provoke and innovate from an early age. The desire was cultivated by working alongside another iconic Danish designer, Arne Jacobsen, in the 1950s. However, Panton proved to be an "enfant terrible" and ventured out on his own to develop and polish his fluid, futuristic style. From the '50s through the '90s, Panton remained on the cutting edge of design. He developed the first inflatable furniture, designed the first chair cast in one piece (the S chair) and was forever experimenting with light and color. | | Design is inspiring.
