She trained under and worked with such renowned Italian designers as Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti. | Urquiola is perhaps best known for her furniture designs for Moroso and Kartell, though her lighting, furniture and jewelry designs for Agape, B&B, Alessi, Driade, Foscarini, and FLOS Lighting are standout stunners, too. | | | | Pablo Pardo | Born in Venezuela, Pablo Pardo came to the US in the early 1980s and stayed. After getting his degree in industrial design from the University of Cincinnati in 1986, he designed for companies ranging from Fisher Price to Daimler Chrysler before settling in San Francisco. There he founded Pablo Designs in 1993, a lighting company specializing in refined designs that reinterpret light in its many forms. | Pablo Designs' first successful design was the Piccola Table Lamp that same year. They've released new products just about every year since, including award-winning contemporary lighting and home furnishings. | | | | Arne Jacobsen | Arne Jacobsen, born in 1902, is often referred to as the father of mid-century modern Danish design. While also noted for his architectural achievements, Jacobsen is most famous for his furniture designs, including such iconic pieces as the Ant Chair, the Egg Chair and the Series 7 Chair collection (all for Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen). | When designing buildings, the Arne Jacobsen design approach was to view each as "gesamtkunstwerk," or a total work of art. As such, he was also apt to design the furnishings, accessories and other details that went into each building—like his AJ Collection for Louis Poulsen, originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. | | | | Tom Dixon | While playing bass in a disco band in the '70s never got him lasting recognition, Tunisian-born Tom Dixon's love of found objects and natural materials pushed him into his current profession and garnered him international renown as a modern furniture and lighting designer. He taught himself to weld at age 24, his initial self-produced welded furniture leading to his breakthrough S-Chair design for Cappellini in 1985. | Now an international brand, Tom Dixon is a British design and manufacturing company of lighting and furniture, with products reaching 60 countries and new collections announced every year. | | | | Design is inspiring.
