Hello there,
In good news, we made it past the solstice. It’s only getting brighter from here. We’re writing this from inside a cloud we convinced to become a sweater, while sipping a cup of stronger-than-it-should-be coffee.
Today is a day for running errands but getting distracted, making a drink with an excellent and heaping spoonful of whipped cream on top, and surprising yourself with how late you stay up talking.
For the errands:
- You could pull on a pair of shoes that handle long walks with aplomb. Aplomb, in this case, demands stretch, cushioning, and the tendency to be complimented.
- You could head out to pick up that thing you need, but make sure to grab a drink with something spiced about it. Chai? Fragrant rooibos tea? Gingerbread latte? Up to you.
For the whipped cream drink:
- The nostalgic queen of December is Swiss Miss cocoa,* but dabbling in this double chocolate one wouldn’t be a mistake. It also wouldn’t be a mistake to head to the Sprüngli cafe in downtown Zurich (specifically, the one by Paradeplatz, where the patio has the perfect balance of brisk winter air and sunshine) and order their cocoa, which we think of fondly and often, despite only having had it once.
For the staying up too late talking:
- You could call a friend who stumbled into a dream of yours this week, no matter how random.
- You could order something so spicy it makes you cry and interview each other à la Hot Ones.
- You could host loved ones for dinner and decide not to deal with the dishes—or turn the dishwashing into the part of the night where you share the real gossip.
We’re going to call a friend from middle school, make the Ghiradelli cocoa, and find a lovely present for our mother that still doesn’t quite capture how much she means to us.
