Bob Dole announced this morning that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. "My first treatment will begin on Monday,” the former Senate GOP leader and presidential nominee said in a tweeted statement. “While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own.” — At a spry 97 years old, Dole has had a prolific lobbying career since leaving Congress in 1996. He still lobbies for the firm Alston & Bird , where he is a special counsel. Last year Dole represented three domestic clients, according to disclosure filings, including the casino company Boyd Gaming and the National Association for Home Care & Hospice, and was registered as a foreign agent to represent the Armenian government on “its efforts to build on the strategic partnership with the United States in advance of planned diplomatic talks” last fall. TURKEY HIRES HELP ON JOINT STRIKE PROGRAM: SSTEK, a defense manufacturer owned by Turkey’s defense procurement agency, has hired a team from Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer that includes a former Croatian diplomat to advise the company on “continued participation” in the F-35 joint strike fighter program, according to a contract filed with the Justice Department. — The Trump administration booted Turkey from the program in 2019 following Ankara’s purchase of a Russian air defense system, arguing that the system is meant to take down jets like the F-35, and slapped sanctions on Turkey over the purchase in December. Arnold & Porter may also advise SSTEK on “any relevant export controls and sanctions and related legal issues.” — The Biden administration has indicated that it will maintain the Trump-era policy, per Air Force Magazine’s Rachel Cohen. The six month contract is worth $750,000, according to a copy filed with DOJ. LINCOLN PROJECT LATEST: The Lincoln Project is putting together a “transition advisory committee” to provide “full support and cooperation” for the embattled anti-Trump group’s investigation into allegations against co-founder John Weaver, as well as “any systemic workplace culture issues,” according to an internal memo obtained by our Daniel Lippman. Tara Setmayer, a senior adviser at the Lincoln Project, will chair the committee while executive director Fred Wellman will be vice chair. It will also conduct a “stewardship report” to allow donors insight into how their money was spent, amid questions about how much money the Lincoln Project’s founders made off the project. CHIPMAKERS, BUSINESS GROUPS ASK FOR DOMESTIC FUNDING IN RECOVERY BILL: A coalition of semiconductor manufacturers and various other industry groups is pushing the Biden administration to include funding to incentivize domestic production of semiconductors in the next stimulus bill. In a letter to President Joe Biden today, the Semiconductor Industry Association and an array of other industry groups like Autos Drive America, TechNet, AdvaMed, the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce called for “robust funding” of programs enacted in this year’s NDAA designed to incentivize manufacturing in the U.S. after demand swings during the pandemic caused chip shortages. — The letter comes ahead of a potential executive order from Biden that would “direct his administration to conduct a review of key U.S. supply chains, including those for semiconductors, high-capacity batteries and rare earth metals” and their reliance on overseas producers, CNBC reported. Aside from funding for semiconductor research and manufacturing incentives, the groups are also asking for a related investment tax credit. TWO ROADS DIVERGED: Google and Facebook on Wednesday took sharply different paths in responding to a proposed Australian law that would have required the tech behemoths to “negotiate with media publishers and compensate them for the content that appears on their sites,” The New York Times’ Mike Isaac, Daisuke Wakabayashi, Damien Cave and Edmund Lee report, a dialogue that by no means is isolated to Australia. — “Google began the day by unveiling a three-year global agreement with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp to pay for the publisher’s news content, one of several such deals it has announced recently where it appears to be effectively capitulating to publishers’ demands. Hours later, Facebook took the opposite tack and said it would restrict people and publishers from sharing or viewing news links in Australia, in a move that was effective immediately.” POWELL JOBS ADDS A KENNEDY: “Democratic megadonor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs is beefing up her political operation, bringing in heavyweights like former Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, to help broker relationships in Washington,” Recode’s Teddy Schleifer reports. — Kennedy, who lost a contentious Senate primary against Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) last summer, has joined Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective as a senior adviser, Schleifer writes, making him “one of the highest-profile figures to work at the 150-person organization, bringing with him a Rolodex of valuable political contacts at the dawn of a new Democratic administration. ‘In this role, he will be a trusted collaborator offering guidance on how we can advance our policy priorities and our broader mission building an America that is more equal and just for all,’ reads the Emerson note obtained by Recode.” CONSERVATIVE GROUPS LAUNCH ANTI-BIDEN AD BLITZ: A trio of conservative groups, Judicial Crisis Network, Heritage Action for America, and Americans for Public Trust, have commenced a “multimillion dollar advertising blitz aimed at undermining two of President Joe Biden’s high-profile nominees,” POLITICO’s Meridith McGraw reports. The groups are looking to tank the nominations of Vanita Gupta, Biden’s nominee for associate attorney general, and Xavier Becerra, his nominee to lead HHS. The groups are also going after the role they believe “‘dark money’ played in electing Biden as well as shaping his Cabinet and policies.” Meridith reports that the ad buy will air across cable news networks in Washington, D.C. and digital platforms starting today. FORMER SEC HEAD JOINS APOLLO: “Apollo Global Management Inc. has appointed former Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Jay Clayton to the newly created role of lead independent director on its board, the latest step in a sweeping overhaul of corporate governance at the investment firm,” per The Wall Street Journal’s Miriam Gottfried. Clayton will also rejoin his old law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. The appointment comes as Apollo CEO Leon Black, who is stepping down in July following an investigation into his ties to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, has “recommended that the board appoint more independent directors and move to eliminate Apollo’s dual-class share structure.” | | | — Matthew Colvin is now chief of staff in the AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Department. He was previously a senior legislative representative. Cole Scandaglia has been promoted to senior legislative and policy representative at TTD and Barbara Ehimika will serve as TTD’s PAC director and legislative representative. TTD also announced that Greg Regan has been elected its president while Shari Semelsberger will be secretary-treasurer. — The Aerospace Industries Association has hired Katarina DeFilippo and Scott Harris as managers. DeFilippo was previously a legislative assistant to Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.) and Harris was previously a legislative correspondent for Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.). — Tracey Wingate will become chief of staff to Investment Company Institute President and CEO Eric Pan.
