AFL-CIO TO TAKE ON THE FILIBUSTER: “The AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest federation of unions, called on Democrats Thursday to reform the filibuster, the Senate rule standing in the way of enactment of some of their top priorities for the Biden administration,” POLITICO’s Rebecca Rainey, Holly Otterbein and Eleanor Mueller report. In a scathing statement, the union’s executive board called the procedural mechanism, which is likely to block a sweeping labor overhaul among other legislation, a “creature of white supremacy” and an “instrument of government paralysis” — potentially setting up a showdown with Biden and moderate Senate Democrats, who have resisted doing away with the 60-vote threshold. | | SUBSCRIBE TO “THE RECAST” TO JOIN AN IMPORTANT CONVERSATION: Power dynamics are changing. “Influence” is changing. HOW GEORGE MASON’S LAW SCHOOL SHAPED THE FTC’S APPROACH TO BIG TECH: Bloomberg’s David McLaughlin details a report from the watchdog group Tech Transparency Project that charges the FTC’s hands-off approach with companies like Facebook , whose acquisitions it approved and is now suing to unwind, can be explained in part by the industry’s ties to George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School. — “According to the report, which was published on March 12, Silicon Valley donated substantial sums to” the law school, “which built a pipeline of professors and graduates who went to work at the FTC. Dozens of people went from the school to the regulator—commissioners, bureau heads, attorney-advisers, legal interns—during the Obama and Trump administrations.” BIRX LANDS AT BUSH INSTITUTE: Former White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx is joining the George W.
