Presented by the Household & Commercial Products Association: Delivered daily, Influence gives you a comprehensive rundown and analysis of all lobby hires and news on K Street. | | | | | |  | | By Caitlin Oprysko | Presented by the Household & Commercial Products Association | With Daniel Lippman PROGRESSIVE AND CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS PRESS WASHINGTON TO ADDRESS HEALTH CARE EQUITY: A coalition of more than 30 civil rights, progressive and multicultural groups is appealing to the Biden administration and lawmakers on the Hill to adopt their policy guidelines and “engage directly with community-based organizations and public health advocates when developing interventions to measurably improve health equity.” — “The pandemic’s disproportionate impact on America’s underserved has only magnified longstanding gaps in health outcomes that have been manifested for generations,” the groups, led by the Health Equity Collaborative , wrote in an open letter today. — They laid out 18 guidelines for policymakers — from increasing the diversity of the health care workforce and clinical trials, collecting demographic subgroup data and declaring racism a public health crisis, to addressing mental and maternal health issues, prioritizing mitigation of social determinants of health, gender and racial pay gaps, and expanding access to and lowering the cost of health care. — The letter’s signatories include American Muslim Health Professionals, Center for African American Health, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Easterseals, MANA, National Consumers League, National Council on Independent Living, National Council of Negro Women Inc., National Disability Rights Network, National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, National Hispanic Medical Association, Partnership for Innovation and Empowerment, the South Asian Public Health Association and more. SMITH TO STEP DOWN AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF BROADCASTERS: Former Sen. Gordon Smith will step down from his role as head of the National Association of Broadcasters, the trade organization announced today and our John Hendel reported last night. Smith has been a fixture at the K Street heavyweight, joining more than a decade ago after two terms representing Oregon in the Senate and a stint as a senior adviser at Covington & Burling, and his departure from NAB comes prior to the end of his contract, which was set to run through March 2023. — “Curtis LeGeyt , the trade group’s chief operating officer, will step in to lead the group effective Jan. 1 of next year. LeGeyt is a former Democratic staffer on Capitol Hill and had worked on the 2008 Obama presidential campaign, which could boost his standing under a Biden administration and at a time when Democrats control both chambers of Congress,” John writes. — Smith said in a video announcement released today that he will stay on with the trade group in an advisory role for three more years, however, which will still include lobbying on behalf of the nation’s broadcasters, per joint board of directors Chair and Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb. — Smith helped NAB notch “a notable win at the end of 2019 in a lobbying battle regarding an expiring satellite TV law, safeguarding the revenue that broadcasters charge cable and satellite companies for retransmitting their content,” John notes, in addition to other policy fights. But the trade group, which dropped more than $9 million on lobbying last year, has also seen its finances squeezed by the pandemic, as John reported last fall. Read more here. | | | MFA ADDS FORMER DCCC STAFFER: The Managed Funds Association, which represents the hedge fund industry in Washington, has hired Ryan Hedgepeth as vice president for U.S. government affairs. Hedgepeth was most recently at the DCCC , where he served as deputy executive director for member engagement, and prior to that spent more than two decades on the Hill and in the Obama administration. He’ll register to lobby, according to a spokesperson, and will report to Jillien Flores, the trade group’s head of U.S. government affairs. BLANK ROME ADDS 6: Blank Rome Government Relations has hired away six former members of the law and lobbying firm Chambers, Conlon & Hartwell, adding four new principals and two new senior advisers. Chambers President and senior counsel Don Norden, Katie Kachel and David Tennent are all principals, and Snjezana Arthur , Chambers’ managing partner, will join as a principal in June. Keith Hartwell and Richard Sherman are joining as senior advisers, bolstering Blank Rome’s transportation expertise just as lobbying on infrastructure kicks into high gear. It was not immediately clear whether they will bring any of their rail or transit-heavy client list over to Blank Rome. BROWN, WATERS TO HAUL IN BANK EXECS: “Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown and House Financial Services Chair Maxine Waters have invited the CEOs of the nation's six largest banks to testify in back-to-back hearings that will put a microscope on how Wall Street is dealing with Covid-19, climate change and racial equity,” POLITICO’s Zach Warmbrodt reports. “The unannounced hearings, which the committees are looking to hold as soon as late May, would feature top executives from JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, three sources briefed on the plans said.” TRUMP’S ALLIES RUN INTO AN HR WALL: The Washington Post’s Tory Newmyer reports that some members of former President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, even those with superior corporate credentials like ex-Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, are finding “little interest” from those in charge of hiring in the private sector. — “Top executives wary of backlash from associating with former Trump officials are boiling down Chao’s four-decade Washington résumé to its most recent entry: long-standing ally of Donald Trump, despite her resignation the day after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol,” headhunters told the Post. “One of the headhunters said his team surveyed some companies about their interest in Chao and didn’t find any takers. ‘The feedback was, “It’s too soon,”’ this person said.” The dynamic is compounded by a lack of demand for Republicans due to the new Democratic administration and Democratic control of Congress. CORPORATE AMERICA SHREDS BIDEN INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN: “Corporate America has loudly complained for years about the crumbling state of the U.S. infrastructure and demanded that Washington invest heavily to catch up to the rest of the developed world. But now that President Joe Biden has proposed a massive $2 trillion-plus spending package, the collective response from big business is basically: ‘No thanks, try again,’” POLITICO’s Ben White reports. — “Top executives of companies who in the past have given speeches about the need for infrastructure spending are mostly silent, opting to complain privately that Biden’s plan is too expensive, too partisan, too laden with unrelated social policy and not at all what they had in mind,” and assert that the White House outreach has been haphazard, claims the White House dismissed.
