Presented by Aon: Delivered daily, Influence gives you a comprehensive rundown and analysis of all lobby hires and news on K Street. | | | | By Theodoric Meyer | Presented by Aon | With Daniel Lippman BALLARD ADDS ANOTHER DEMOCRAT: Ballard Partners, one of the go-to lobbying firms for those looking to influence the Trump administration, is adding another Democrat as the firm repositions itself to lobby President Joe Biden’s Washington. The firm has hired John O’Hanlon, one of the co-founders of the Washington Group, where he worked alongside John D. Raffaelli (who went on to start Capitol Counsel) and former Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) (who later became Google’s top lobbyist). — Ketchum bought the Washington Group in 2001, and the firm later merged with Clark & Weinstock, which is now part of Mercury Public Affairs following another merger. O’Hanlon, meanwhile, moved to Maine with his family. But he “was always looking to get back into lobbying” with the right firm, he said in an interview, and he’s back in Washington now. He’s one of several Democrats Ballard has hired since November, including Tola Thompson, who was until recently chief of staff to Rep. Al Lawson (D-Fla.). FORMER TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PENTAGON OFFICIALS HEAD TO K STREET: The lobbying firm Invariant has hired Nick Mikula , who served as a special assistant to the undersecretary of defense for intelligence during the Trump administration. Mikula stuck around as a consultant in the office for the first four months of the Biden administration. He plans to concentrate on lobbying the Hill — he’s a former House Armed Service Committee staffer — but might lobby the Pentagon as well even though he’s a Republican. “I come from the intel side of the Department of Defense, and a lot of their senior leadership is not political in any way, shape or form,” he said. — Covington & Burling, meanwhile, has hired David Norquist, who served as President Donald Trump’s deputy defense secretary and briefly ran the Pentagon during the first days of the Biden administration before the Senate confirmed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin . He’ll be a senior adviser in Covington’s aerospace and defense industry practices but doesn’t plan to lobby, according to the firm. Good afternoon and welcome to PI. S-3’s Matt Bravo , a former House Republican leadership aide, will lobby for Facebook on “security data legislation, discussion regarding cyber security, data security, encryption, and platform integrity,” according to a disclosure filing. FLYING IN (VIRTUALLY): Members of the National Shooting Sports Foundation are holding a virtual fly-in this week timed to coincide with the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing on Wednesday for David Chipman, Biden’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. They’ll meet with Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), among other lawmakers, to protest his nomination. — Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) will address members of the Distilled Spirits Council and the American Craft Spirits Association this week at their annual fly-in. Distillers will also meet virtually with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.); and Reps. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) and John Yarmuth (D-Ky.). — And the National Utility Contractors Association is scheduled to hear from Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), Sam Graves (R-Mo.), Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) and Sens. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) as part of its own virtual fly-in. | | SUBSCRIBE TO "THE RECAST" TODAY: Power is shifting in Washington and in communities across the country. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) over her comparison of “vaccine passports” to Jews being forced to wear yellow stars in Nazi Germany. “WTF is wrong with you?” he tweeted. “I think you need to pay a visit to the US Holocaust Museum.I’d be happy to arrange. Then maybe going forward you wouldn’t make anymore disgusting, ignorant and offensive tweets. If I’m wrong and you’re not ignorant about Holocaust..then you are disgusting.” — Miller, who built Miller Strategies into a prominent lobbying firm during the Trump administration, was appointed by Trump last year to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. He was hardly the only Republican to speak out against Greene. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who’s close to Miller, also denounced Greene’s tweet in a statement this morning (which Miller duly retweeted). — Miller also bashed the press for failing to take notice of his earlier criticism of Democrats for what he called “their anti-Israel and anti-Semitic statements.” The mainstream media “now only pays attention to what I’m saying because there’s one and only one Republican doing the same and I attack her for it,” he wrote on Twitter after his original tweet attracted attention. “The media bias is so gross.” | | | | | | — Francisco Carrillo has left the Hill to join Pfizer’s Washington office.
