BMW’s boxer-powered GS has the distinction of kicking off the increasingly popular adventure segment. From the air-cooled, pushrod R 80 GS in 1980 came a continuous development of BMW’s touring enduro that now includes rider aids, electronic suspension, and ShiftCam valve timing in 2023. BMW Motorrad used the occasion of the 1,000,000th GS boxer to confirm that a new R 1300 GS is on the way and will be fully revealed September 2023.
Ahead of that reveal, let's take a look at some of our favorite Cycle World articles on BMW’s big boxer GS models.
There’s the time we compared the king of touring, Honda’s Gold Wing, to an R 1250 GS Adventure to find out which is the better mount for real-world touring. There were plenty of letters to the editor about our verdict. Check it out here.
In 2021, the CW crew headed to Utah to compare the 2021 R 1250 GS to Harley-Davidson’s Pan America 1250 Special and Ducati’s Multistrada V4 S. In that contest, the R 1250 GS put up a solid fight, but the current platform was just a step behind the Harley newcomer.
We can’t wait to see how the next big ADV dustup shakes out when we get our hands on the R 1300 GS; will the adventure touring king return to its throne as the all-time ADV champ? Only time will tell, but history says don’t bet against it.
As always, there’s more than we can fit into this email. Check out cycleworld.com for additional tests, reviews, and news.
Ride on,
