Torrential Downpours Trigger Deadly Flooding in California

A series of storms over the last two weeks have hammered California with extreme rains and snowfall. At least 18 people have died as relentless storms and damaging winds continue to pummel the state. As of this writing, search and rescue efforts continue for a 5-year-old boy who was swept away from a swamped vehicle as his mother attempted to drive him to school.

The violent storms have caused surging rivers, flash floods, massive landslides, downed trees, and sinkholes.

Tens of thousands have been ordered to evacuate, including the entire community of Montecito, which suffered deadly mudslides nearly 5 years ago to the day.

“Weather Whiplash” – Bone-Dry to Supersaturated

Severe downpours on the heels of extreme drought and wildfires is the perfect storm for flood conditions because the scorched earth doesn’t absorb water well. It’s also a recipe for mudslides.

A small silver-lining is that heavy rain and snow made a dent in California's years-long drought. Parts of the state have received more than 3 feet of rain since Christmas, and mountain locations in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties saw upwards of 19 inches of rain in a 48-hour period.

Meanwhile, snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is already 200-300% above the seasonal average. While the storms are jeopardizing residents, they’re also helping replenish the state’s reservoirs.

Bracing for More Storms

Meteorologists expect more wet days ahead, and say powerful storms are forecasted to continue off and on until at least the end of the week. Storms will likely be accompanied by more flooding. The ground simply can’t soak up any more rain, and there’s nowhere for the water to go. Flood watches and warnings remain in effect for large swaths of the state. Hundreds of thousands are still displaced.

Ultimately, the damage could top $1 billion.

Californians have started to clean up amid breaks in the weather. As residents catch their breath, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto warned that flood waters might cut Monterey Peninsula off from the rest of California.

Transportation authorities are urging citizens to stay home and avoid any non-essential travel. Many highways have been turned into raging rivers, and at least 40 state routes have been closed.

Ready.gov Recommendations

If you’re under a flood warning, Ready.gov offers the following advice:

- Find safe shelter right away.
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
- Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
- Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
- Depending on the type of flooding:
- Evacuate if told to do so.
- Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
- Stay where you are.

Preparing for a Flood

Before heavy rains put your household in jeopardy, have a plan. There’s a good chance power and other services could be disrupted. Be prepared with supplies like water, non-perishable foods, drybags,
cleaning supplies, flashlights, and an emergency weather radio.

Learn and memorize different evacuation routes in case you need to leave your home.
