Whether it’s a load of laundry or a stack of paving stones, knowing how to properly lift and carry heavy objects is key to preventing avoidable strains and injuries. Here’s what to be aware of when it’s time for grunt work.

Start by bending your hips and knees to squat down to what you are lifting. Keep the object close to your body and straighten your legs to lift. Avoid bending forward to lift, as this is a common way to cause strain.

Bend your elbows so that the object rests at stomach height, as close to your body as possible. Keep your back straight, chest out, and engage your core muscles. Move with small, controlled steps and think about leading with your hips.

With careful and controlled movements, reverse your lifting posture. Establish a wide base with your feet shoulder-width apart, and squat with your knees and hips only. Since you’ll be standing back up empty handed, you can even place one knee on the floor.
