In the early 17th century, hemp was used to produce a variety of materials essential to daily life; from rope and cloth to paper used for things like Bibles and maps. Early Americans even pressed hemp seeds to make lamp oil. In fact, in the colony of Jamestown, Virginia, each farm was required to grow one acre of hemp; those that refused were fined or jailed.

George Washington, whose birthday is the reason we began celebrating what is now President's Day, famously grew hemp on his Mount Vernon farm. He grew three varieties, New Zealand, West Indies, and American, and used the plant's fibers to produce rope and canvas. He even predicted that hemp would one day be more profitable than tobacco (if only, right?).
