Making protective clothing for Icelandic fishermen and workers braving the North Atlantic elements is 66°North heritage. In 1926 when Hans Kristjánsson founded 66°North, suitable clothing for fishermen was simply a matter of life and death. We are proud of our heritage and continue to make fishermen clothing to this day.

Fishermen’s Day has been held on the first Sunday in June since 1938 and was originally established to promote solidarity among fishermen. The celebration of this day reflects traditional Icelandic culture and the nation’s long-standing dependence on fishing.

Icelanders celebrate all across the country, with sea-related entertainment for the whole family by the harbour.

We have published stories in NORDUR Journal about fishermen and life on the sea.
Check out these two of our favorites:
"This wasn't my first time out on the sea, but each time is always a vibrant experience. You are set on a ship with 24 other male colleagues and there's nowhere to go for the next 30 days."
Arnar Logi was a "deckhand" on the trawler Júlíus Geirmundsson ÍS 270, which docks at Ísafjörður on the Westfjord of Iceland.

"It is difficult to describe to others how things actually work out on the sea because you actually have to experience it for yourself to be able to understand it. I can remember from a young age my dad trying to explain how life is on board a fishing boat. I didn't understand that much and I couldn't get my head around all these concepts. It wasn't until around the age of 13 that things started to make sense."
Anton Jónas has always been interested in photographing and showing others life on a fishing boat.
