Noro Inclinations Shawl!

Noro yarns have a magical way of attracting and entrancing our shop visitors. The colors are vivid and fun, and knitters always ask for pattern suggestions to help show off all that color - and today, we've got you covered! 

Loop staffer Bonnie recently paired Noro Ito with Noro Haunui to knit a texture-rich Inclinations Shawl from designer Andrea Mowery. Bonnie did a beautiful job of using a solid Haunui color to ground the variegated color stripes of Ito, resulting in a shawl with a sophisticatedly moody vibe!

Worsted weight Haunui and Ito are a match made in yarny heaven! In addition to having the same spin and texture, they also have the same yardage!

Haunui comes to us from a New Zealand flock of Romney sheep, where fleeces are gently harvested, sorted into color families, then spun into a soft, limited palette of 5 undyed, solid colors ranging from light oatmeal to deep, rich browns. 

Ito is all about color! Its short striping color shifts take the guesswork out of changing colors as you knit - this yarn does all the work for you! 

When used together, Ito delivers a big color payoff and bold color changes, while Haunui's warm collection of sheepy neutrals does a fantastic job of showcasing all of that color and softening Ito's slightly more rustic feel.

The Inclinations shawl is knit using a technique called Fisherman's Rib. It's different than standard ribbing and similar to brioche. If this is a new or unfamiliar technique to you, don't fret! The designer has posted a handful of helpful videos that will walk you through Fisherman's Rib, increase in Fisherman's Rib, change colors, and work a tidy i-cord bind off.

Once you get the hang of it, the knitting becomes very meditative and intuitive!

To knit an Inclinations Shawl, you'll need:

• 1 ball of Noro Haunui
• 1 ball of Noro Ito
• US 5 32" circular needle
• Inclinations Shawl pattern

A note on choosing colors:

In this world of supply chain issues, the colors we used were no longer available by the time we finished our shawl! To achieve a shawl that looks like ours, we recommend using Ito in Gamigori with Haunui in Lindis Pass.

Other combos we love:

- Noshiro or Konan with South Canterbury

- Kitakyushu or Bizen with Mackenzie Basin or Burkes Pass

- Anjo or Toki with Lindis Pass
