Q&A WITH Dr. MAREN FOR MOTHER’S DAY The road to motherhood is different for everyone. Some step into conception easily while others struggle - leading to a lengthy process of determining cause and solution. For Mother’s Day, we wanted to spotlight our Practitioner Partner, Dr. Christine Maren, who has boldly told her fertility story and path to becoming a mom.

Q. Tell us about your journey to becoming a Mom. A. Many of us practicing functional medicine have a personal health story that brought us here. My story became most apparent after pregnancy complications and recurrent miscarriages helped me to uncover underlying health issues associated with gut infections, food sensitivities, hypothyroidism and environmental toxins. During my first pregnancy, I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. My health issues took center stage again when my husband and I tried for a second child and suffered through recurrent miscarriages. I felt heartbroken and scared, because recurrent pregnancy loss reinforced to me that something was wrong with my body. I was also motivated more than ever to make some drastic changes.

Q: What changes did you make? A: Recognizing that most of my health issues were related to digestive problems and hidden food sensitivities, I focused on healing my gut. Through advanced functional medicine testing, including stool and urine organic acids, I learned about the underlying causes of my IBS – including Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and candida overgrowth. I used everything from pharmaceuticals, herbs and supplements to mind-body work to help recover. Given my training, I also knew that toxins were likely playing a role. I discovered specific environmental toxins including mold and mycotoxins that were contributing to my issues, so I worked to mitigate those exposures while focusing on detoxification. I also moved on from the emotionally toxic relationships in my life and did everything I could to minimize stress during this time. Q: What do you tell your patients who come to you struggling with fertility? A: While there’s no one size fits all, I’m passionate about helping other women in this phase of life. Much of my clinical practice is focused on helping couples who are trying to conceive improve their health so that they can have better fertility and pregnancy outcomes. It’s also part of the reason I co-founded Hey Mami, a platform dedicated to helping women achieve a happier and healthier mamihood.
