Tomorrow on November 26th, 25% of all online sales will fund the Icelandic Glaciological Society, which researches and protects our glaciers in Iceland. This follows what we have done for the past three years, where we have donated part of our online sales to funds that all have one thing in common: protect our nature.

Glaciers make Iceland an extraordinary place. Let’s do what we can to keep it that way. Whether you shop with us on Friday or donate directly to the Icelandic Glaciological Society, you will be helping us preserve the Icelandic glaciers for future generations.

This year Ragnar surveys Drangajökull’s east side for the second time. He took over from his father, Þröstur, who did it for 25 years. Þröstur took over from his uncle, Guðfinnur, who was in charge of the previous 50 years. Ragnar, his father Þröstur, and Erla, Þröstur’s twin sister, go on a yearly autumn trip to Reykjarfjörður to prepare their houses for winter.

Reykjarfjörður, a fjord on the east side of the Drangajökull glacier, was the home of their ancestors for generations. Once the houses are ready for winter, they prepare to exit the region on foot over the glacier so that Ragnar can take his measurements.

The glacier has receded 60 meters in the past 12 months. It’s disappearing at the same speed as those southern glaciers - new reports state that it might be completely gone by 2050.

The NORÐUR journal story “Where the ice melts” is a part of the Glacier Friday initiative, which aims to both shed a light on the gravity of the retreat of Icelandic glaciers and to support non-profit organizations that aim to address the problem.
