Plus, the makeup remover that will eviscerate your waterproof mascara. | | From Pat McGrath’s instantly legendary porcelain skin for Maison Margiela's couture show to the doll-like spidery lashes and sky-high hair at Marc Jacobs's spring show, the full-throttle beauty on the runways recently is giving me life. Oh, and don’t even get me started on Miley’s Barbarella hair for the Grammys—pure camp genius! There’s a certain feel-good irreverence to it all, which is something that also came through in my chat with Emma Chamberlain for our Night Moves column. She just wants to have capital-F fun with beauty and is never afraid to go all in on a bold makeup moment. As I contemplate what to pack for a trip to Paris, it’s inspiring a go-big-or-stay-home mood. Stay tuned to see where that lands me. Au revoir ‘till next week! | — Lauren Valenti, InStyle Beauty Director | | | | | | PHOTO: LAUREN VALENTI | What’s on Lauren’s Desk | Every time a new jewel from Dries Van Noten hits my desk, the world stops, and I drop everything to bask in its beauty and test-drive it immediately. So you can imagine my delight in unwrapping the zebra print–splashed bottle of the new Rosa Carnivora fragrance, a unique rose scent dashed with dry and earthy vetiver that—true to perfumer Daphné Bugey’s promise—is “strangely beautiful, real, imperfect and ambiguous.” Then, arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day is Byroe’s Black Cherry lip oil, which evokes the feeling of biting into a ripe, juicy cherry, supplying a sheer tint and plumped effect. On the hair-care front, I’m thrilled to get my hands on hairstylist James Pecis’s new brand, Blu Green. Between his insane talent and longstanding dedication to sustainability, I know his offerings (which include a reparative mask and just-add-water shampoo tablets) will be innovative, effective, and good for the planet. | | | | | BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK | | “Like a classic red lipstick, [monochrome] blue eyeshadow will always be universally flattering on everyone.” | — celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker | | | | EMPTY OF THE WEEK | Dr. Barbara Sturm Makeup Remover | Smoky eyes. Graphic wings. Full, fluttery lashes. I love eye makeup, but there’s no way around it: getting it off at the end of the day is a true chore. But Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Makeup Remover has been making it an entirely more pleasant process. It’s silky and non-greasy and, after leaving it on my eyes for a couple of seconds, the deep, dark pigments melt away, thanks to its special dual-phase oil and micelle technology, which combines when you shake the bottle. It’s a game-changing first step for my double-cleansing routine! | | | | | | PHOTO: Getty Images | Q+A with Lauren | Q: How do you detangle your curly hair without damaging it? | A: It’s a delicate dance, to say the least. The fact is, no matter what, I have to invest time and energy into carefully and meticulously detangling my fragile curls. In this spirit, finger-combing dry hair is ideal. But, if I don’t have the time or patience, I gently and slowly use a tried-and-true Wet Brush (Felicia Leatherwood’s Dentagler Brush is also great, especially for kinky and coily textures) while conditioning my hair in the shower. If I have a really stubborn knot around the nape of my neck, I’ll reach for a lightweight detangler, like Pattern’s Detangling Nectar or LolaVie’s Glossing formula, for extra slip. This is all to say, TLC is the name of the game.
