PECK MADIGAN JONES REBRANDS: Peck Madigan Jones, one of the top lobbying firms on K Street, announced today that it will drop the name and rebrand as Tiber Creek Group . “The rebrand reflects the firm’s leadership changes over the last few years” — the firm added three new equity owners in 2019 — “and better reflects our culture of teamwork and collaboration,” managing partner Jonathon Jones said in a statement. “Our firm now consists of more than two dozen government affairs professionals, and the range of experience and service we now provide extends well beyond three people.”

— The new name is a nod to the Tiber Creek, which used to flow from Capitol Hill to the Washington Monument. “Like the creek that continues to flow to this day, our firm continues to navigate the ever changing landscape of Washington,” Jones said. The rebranded shop includes Peck Madigan Jones’ subsidiaries Ickes & Enright Group, Bay Bridge Strategies and Tiber Creek Health Strategies.

FLYING IN (VIRTUALLY): The rail industry, including representatives from the Association of American Railroads; the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association; the Railway Supply Institute; Railway Systems Suppliers Inc.; the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers; and the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association are holding their annual Railroad Day today and tomorrow to push the industry’s priorities, which include opposing increases in truck capacity that could shift traffic away from railroads, and more funding for the Railroad Retirement Board.

— Advocates have more than 260 meetings planned today and tomorrow, according to the Association of American Railroads. Today they are meeting with House Transportation Rail Subcommittee Chair Donald Payne (D-N.J.), as well as with staff from the offices of Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Reps. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), Troy Nehls (R-Texas), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) and Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.).

A message from REAL SOLUTIONS®, a community safety program of the firearm industry:

The firearm industry is creating safer communities through partnerships with law enforcement, elected officials, and community leaders. Our REAL SOLUTIONS® programs have distributed more than 40 million free gun locks to promote secure storage, strengthened the FBI background check system to keep guns out of the wrong hands, and provided thousands of suicide prevention toolkits in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. These are true gun safety programs. Make a difference at NSSFRealSolutions.org.

LITIGATION FUNDERS GROUP ADDS LOBBYISTS: The International Legal Finance Association, a trade association formed last summer to present a unified front in the face of a potential crackdown on the litigation finance industry, has hired its first lobbyists. The trade group, which represents several major names in the industry known for providing money to law firms to fund commercial lawsuits, last month hired West Front Strategies — including a former aide to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — and Van Scoyoc Associates to advocate on its behalf.

BROOKINGS, URBAN INSTITUTE STAFFERS ASK TO UNIONIZE: “Workers at two of the largest, most influential think tanks in Washington, D.C., are forming a union, adding to a growing trend in white-collar collective bargaining,” POLITICO’s Rebecca Rainey reports. “Staff at the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute on Tuesday asked their employers to grant them voluntary recognition — which doesn’t require a secret ballot election — of their unions, which are affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union , IFPTE Local 70.

— “The labor movement’s efforts to organize think tanks ... is the latest white-collar sector to see a burst in collective bargaining. Labor efforts have poured into Silicon Valley and have expanded to groups of workers not typically protected under federal labor law, like independent contractors.

— “The NPEU has successfully organized several other prominent think tanks in the D.C. area, including The Center for American Progress, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Economic Policy Institute, National Immigration Law Center, and the National Women’s Law Center, among others.”

BIDEN FACES HEADWINDS ON ADDRESSING CHIP SHORTAGE: “President Joe Biden faces an inconvenient reality as he tackles the political and economic headaches caused by a global shortage of chips needed to build computers, medical devices and automobiles: There’s no immediate fix,” POLITICO’s Steven Overly reports. “Biden on Monday told CEOs gathered virtually at the White House for a meeting on the problem that he has bipartisan support to boost funding for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. But the results of that effort would take years to manifest and would do little to address the crunch in the near term.”

AAPI ACTIVISTS RECALIBRATE AFTER HARROWING YEAR: AAPI Victory Fund, a super PAC representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, unveiled a new nonprofit group on Monday “ aimed at developing a greater understanding of the complex and nuanced population that has long been excluded from conversations about issues such as racial justice, economic disparity and politics generally” — issues that the pandemic has only highlighted — report The Washington Post’s Colby Itkowitz and Amy B. Wang.

— “The past year has made it clear to both Asian Americans and the broader population that race matters for Asian Americans and we have to think about those particularized needs in a different way than we have in the past,” Janelle Wong, an AAPI Victory Alliance board member and professor of Asian American studies at the University of Maryland, told the paper.

ACROSS THE POND: David Cameron once warned that lobbying was Britain’s ‘next big scandal.’ He probably didn’t imagine that he would be at the center of that scandal and that his actions would shine an unfavorable light on the government transparency system that the former prime minister himself helped set up,” POLITICO Europe’s Matt Honeycombe-Foster writes.

— “The current government is treating the scandal, which has seen successive newspaper stories about Cameron’s attempts to influence British ministers on behalf of his post-government employer, a now-collapsed financial firm called Greensill , so seriously that it’s just launched an independent inquiry, and the opposition Labour Party wants to grill ministers in parliament Tuesday. Yet transparency campaigners and even Westminster’s lobbyists themselves point out that the steady drumbeat of revelations comes in spite of, and not because of, the U.K.’s promises about open government.”

Partnerships with over 15,000 law enforcement agencies. Distribution of more than 40 million free firearm safety kits. A 266% increase in disqualifying records submitted to the FBI background check system. These are just a few of the success metrics behind the firearm industry’s REAL SOLUTIONS® programs. For decades, the firearm industry has been creating safer communities through partnerships with law enforcement, elected officials, and community leaders. We’re proud to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and members of Congress, regardless of political stripe to create safer communities.
