Plus, the best way to use coconut oil in your hair. | | Fashion month has only just begun, but it’s already generated a tidal wave of beauty inspiration. At New York Fashion Week, the shift towards more-is-more hair and makeup continued with an array of trends, running the gamut from doll-like ‘60s lashes (you couldn’t miss them at Marc Jacobs) to mesmerizing braid looks at Luar, Tory Burch, and Thom Browne. It’s impossible to pick favorites, but let’s just say I can’t stop thinking about the 1940s-meets-2020s rolled half-ups at Diotima or the smoky eyes and burgundy lips at Anna Sui. While my mood board runneth over already, I’m excited to see all the inspiration that awaits! | — Lauren Valenti, InStyle Beauty Director | | | | | | PHOTO: LAUREN VALENTI | What’s on Lauren’s Desk | Valentine’s Day may be over, but my desk is still in the mood for love — according to Guerlain’s Fève Gourmande. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a made-for-V-day fragrance, from its fuschia-tinted juice to its combination of fresh rose, spicy rum, and a special cocoa accord that evokes a heart-shaped box of chocolates. It looks especially gorgeous next to Ceremonia’s new Mascarilla de Guava hair mask, a restorative treatment for damaged hair packed with extracts from guava and agave, among nourishing, antioxidant-packed oils. On the makeup front, two new launches I’m loving are the Gucci Gloss à Lèvres lip gloss for an instant dose of volumizing shine and the Sisley Paris Phyto-Teint foundation, which supplies a veil of sheer, lit-from-within coverage with a satin finish. | | | | | BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK | | Use a sebum-controlling product — like Bioderma Sébium Mat Control — over the nose, between the brows, and dotted on your chin to keep shine and pesky oil production at bay. | — Jo Baker, celebrity makeup artist and co-founder of makeup line Bakeup Beauty. | | | | EMPTY OF THE WEEK | Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss | There’s nothing like a shimmering tinted lip gloss to hide the sins of chapped lips. And lately, I really can’t get enough of the Dior Addict Lip Maximizer in warm-toned pink Rosewood. It’s supercharged with cherry oil and hyaluronic acid and supplies a gorgeous veil of color while instantly plumping my lips with a cooling, minty sensation. I'm obsessed with the vanilla scent and how lovely it feels on my lips — on top of them looking way fuller with a dewy shine. | | | | | | PHOTO: Getty Images | Q+A with Lauren | Q: What's the best way to use coconut oil in your hair? | A: Coconut oil is a tried-and-true ingredient for good reason. It’s the highest natural source of lauric acid, a type of saturated fat that’s easily absorbed in the hair shaft, providing deep moisture and nourishment. Shine, strength, and hydration… coconut oil does it all. But you don’t want to overdo it, either — especially in its raw form. “Pure coconut oil is heavy and can clog follicles, so don’t use it as a leave-in treatment,” says celebrity hairstylist T. Cooper. “Instead, massage the coconut oil into the scalp, leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes, and then shampoo your hair. This will leave your crown with the nourishment without weighing down your hair.” Coconut oil is also infused into many amazing products, like Briogeo’s Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo and Pattern’s Curl Gel. “If you are using a product that has coconut oil as an ingredient, it can be left in the hair until your next shampoo,” T. Cooper adds.
