Knit with 100% American wool this winter! If you've ever knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, then you know why this woolly delight is one of the most popular yarns in our shop. And if Shelter is new to you, read on to learn why it's earned such a special place in the hearts of knitters! | | On the surface, gorgeously dyed Shelter is a worsted weight delight that you'll want to knit with again and again. But there's more to the Shelter story than meets the eye. Prior to founding Brooklyn Tweed, Jared Flood was a prolific knitwear designer dogged by a humble dilemma: "With our abundance of natural and industrial resources, why is there such a tangible absence of American yarns commercially available to handknitters?" That question challenged Flood to embark on a journey for a quintessentially all-American yarn, which he eventually found with the creation of Shelter, Brooklyn Tweed's very first yarn. | | Made entirely in the USA from sheep to skein, Shelter is a unique, woolen spun blend of Wyoming-grown Targhee and Columbia wools. Together this blend creates a richly textural fabric with durability, elasticity, warmth, structure and strength. The wool fleeces are dyed right here in Philadelphia, PA, then spun in Harrisville, NH, at a historic mill that's been spinning up woolen spun yarns since 1794. So what does "woolen spun" mean? It refers to the specific way wool fibers are spun and plied to create yarn. Brooklyn Tweed describes Shelter as a two-ply, "lofty jumble" of wool spun together to form a fiber that traps air for lightweight warmth. As you knit, Shelter exhibits crisp stitch definition and a rustic hand. The real magic happens with the beauty of its bloom: once hand-washed, Shelter's fabric relaxes to reveal satisfyingly plumped stitches with a slight halo that doesn't alter your gauge. This workhorse yarn is perfect for cables, ribbing, textured stitch motifs, open work, plain stockinette and garter stitch, and ideal for sweaters, winter accessories and toasty warm blankets. And Shelter's colors are nothing short of amazing! Shop your perfect Shelter palette at Loop, Loop West or in our online shop! | | Stillwater cardigan by Marie Greene is match made in Shelter heaven! This timeless wardrobe staple has cozy details that are as enjoyable to knit as this cardi is to wear. It's knit in one piece from the top down on a circular needle and features deceptively simple, faux-cable motifs on either side of the button band (the "cables" are actually eyelets + reverse stockinette stitching -- no complex cabling or cable needles required!) | | Stillwater is graded for sizes spanning 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 52) inch actual bust size and suggests zero ease because this cardi is meant to be worn open.
