JOHN PODESTA thinks the truth is out there.

And he believes that President JOE BIDEN can help.

The former White House chief of staff and Democratic party luminary has been pushing the federal government to be more transparent on all things UFO — or “unidentified aerial phenomena” for people who want to sound more serious — for over two decades.

Now that the Pentagon and the media are taking the subject more seriously, Podesta thinks Biden should move the ball forward by creating a dedicated UFO office inside the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

“They're more used to dealing in an open-source environment, used to dealing with scientific information disclosed to the public, and having a conversation with the scientific community than, you know, black programs at the Pentagon,” Podesta told West Wing Playbook while driving with his wife across rural Wyoming.

The idea for the office, which Podesta credits to novice UFO researcher and journalist LESLIE KEAN , would be a “central hub” to pool all the X-Files from across the federal government and then, ideally, share them with the public. OSTP declined to comment.

Podesta says he is particularly interested in the 1965 crash of an unidentified object in Kecksburg, Pa., in 1965. “There were clearly more documents generated than were disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act given the attention the government paid to it,” he said.

The UFO issue has gotten a flurry of coverage in recent months — from the New Yorker, “60 Minutes,” and many others. It’s not going away, either. Biden’s director of national intelligence is mandated to produce a public report to Congress documenting “unidentified aerial phenomena” or “anomalous aerial vehicles," per legislation signed during the Trump administration.

While the Senate Intelligence Committee has been pushing for information as soon as June 25, some expect the Biden administration to delay the report due to foot dragging by military and spy agencies.

White House press secretary JEN PSAKI told reporters today that the White House was “aware of the report requirement and our team at the office of the director of national intelligence (ODNI) is of course actively working on that report.” She said ODNI would ultimately decide whether to release the report in full.

Trump’s former national intelligence director, JOHN RATCLIFFE, teased the report on Fox News in March. “Frankly, there are a lot more sightings than have been made public,” he said.

Podesta says that there has been a sea change in the way the federal government deals with the question of UFOs and how the public writ-large reacts to those who express belief in them. “It was kind of career-ending to basically talk about this subject. That has clearly switched, and that's a good thing,” he said.

Podesta’s own interest in the subject goes back to the 1990s. "John can get totally maniacal and phobic on certain subjects," President BILL CLINTON’s press secretary, MIKE McCURRY, told the Washington Post in 1998. "He's been known to pick up the phone to call the Air Force and ask them what's going on in Area 51."

“What intrigued me about this was how much the government refused to sort of come clean on things that it’s done in the past,” Podesta said.

Over time, Podesta’s association with the issue became so pronounced that fanatical UFO believers latched onto HILLARY CLINTON’s 2008 presidential campaign (to which he was an adviser) even after a fellow candidate — DENNIS KUCINICH — claimed during a Democratic debate that he’d personally seen a UFO. In January 2016, Hillary said Podesta had made her "personally pledge we are going to get the information out."

Podesta did temper expectations for those hoping for/dreading proof of aliens. “I'm not expecting to have my wife and myself beamed up from my car into a spaceship,” he said. “I just like to know what the government knows and I think the public has a right to know.”

PRESIDENTIAL TRIVIA

With the Partnership for Public Service

How many presidents were World War II veterans?

(Answer is at the bottom.)

The Oval

NOTHING IF NOT PRACTICAL — Biden and ANTHONY FAUCI sat down this week for a joint interview with beauty blogger/influencer/YouTuber MANNY MUA (such a 2021 sentence) to discuss Covid-19 vaccines. Asked what one skin care product he would bring to a desert island, Biden gave a very Biden answer: sunscreen.

The GOP tried to hit Biden for participating in the Q&A, accusing him of “TikToking His Way Through Crises.”

THINGS POLL APART: White House chief of staff RON KLAIN celebrated Biden’s relatively strong approval rating today using a popular (if tired) meme. “TIRED: Can Biden navigate all these crises?” Klain tweeted, followed by the word “WIRED:”and a link to a story in The Hill on a new poll showing Biden with a 62 percent approval rating.

“INSPIRED: 50 percent of all U.S. adults fully vaccinated today,” added CLARKE HUMPHREY , the White House Covid response team’s digital director, who quote-tweeted Klain.

Wired or not, the poll, conducted by Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies and the Harris Poll, is a little more optimistic about Biden’s popularity than Biden’s polling average, which remained remarkably stable over the course of his presidency.

About 55 percent of Americans approve of Biden’s job performance, according to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average , and about 40 percent disapprove. Which is pretty close to where he was in his first week in office.

Advise and Consent

CLARKE CONFIRMED After facing a deadlock in committee and an extra vote on the Senate floor, KRISTEN CLARKE was finally confirmed to be assistant attorney general leading the Justice Department’s civil rights division, by a vote of 51-48.

One Republican, Sen. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, joined all 50 Senate Democrats in supporting Clarke, whom some conservatives had tried to paint as a radical nominee.

Clarke will be the first Black woman to hold the position. Read her op-ed on policing, published just after GEORGE FLOYD’s murder.

ANOTHER FIRST: CHIQUITA BROOKS-LaSURE was confirmed to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 55-44. An Obama administration vet, she will be the first Black person to hold the position.

NEXT STOP, THE FLOOR:The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to advance BONNIE JENKINS’ nomination to be undersecretary of State for arms control and international security and JOSE FERNANDEZ’s nomination to be an under secretary of State for economic growth, energy and the environment.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS Tomorrow, the Environment and Public Works Committee will vote on the nominations of SHANNON ESTENOZ to be assistant Interior secretary for fish and wildlife and RADHIKA FOX and MICHAL FREEDHOFF to be assistant EPA administrators.

The Veterans’ Affairs committee will vote on Department of Veterans Affairs nominees DONALD REMY to be deputy secretary; MATTHEW QUINN to be undersecretary for memorial affairs; and MARYANNE DONAGHY and PATRICIA ROSS to be assistant secretaries.

The Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing with UR JADDOU, Biden’s nominee to be director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services; DAVID CHIPMAN to be director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; ANNE MILGRAM to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration; and KENNETH POLITE JR. to be an assistant attorney general.

They committee will also hear testimony from federal judge nominees TIFFANY CUNNINGHAM and MARGARET STRICKLAND,

The Oppo Book

SUSAN RICE, director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council, was a star athlete in high school. She played point guard on the National Cathedral School basketball team.

Rice was so athletic, her family nicknamed her “Spo”—short for sport—and apparently some family members still use that nickname for her, according to a 2012 Washington Post article.

In a 2016 interview with The Undefeated, Rice said her best sport was not basketball but tennis, that her heroes growing up were MARTINA NAVRATILOVA and BILLIE JEAN KING, and that, on the weekends, she liked to play “some real tennis.”

Maybe she’d be up for some doubles with the West Wing Playbook crew? Maybe her Spo nickname will catch on again? Make it happen, ERIN PELTON.
